Admittance Criteria

Criteria for K-3:

  • Child must be completely potty trained. We reserve the right to terminate enrollment if your child shows signs of not being potty trained
  • Child must be 3 by November 30th to advance to the 4's class in the following school year. If not, they are welcome to stay in the 3's class another year.
  • Your child's birth certificate and health form will need to be presented prior to the first day of attendance.

In each case alternate placement may be recommended by the teacher with consent of the parents.

Criteria for K-4:

  • Child must be 4 by November 30th. Please be aware when planning for next year, that the Prince William County School system has different age requirements for Kindergarten entrance than Teaching the Basics. The following is PWCS policy:

The following procedures, based upon the Code of Virginia (Regulation 723-1), shall govern the entrance age of students:

  1. A child who is five years old on or before September 30 will be allowed to enroll in kindergarten in Prince William County Schools. As an exception, a child who was permitted to enroll in public kindergarten in another state prior to reaching age five by September 30 and who, accompanied by his/her parents/guardians, moves into Prince William County after the start of school may be allowed to continue in kindergarten. This exception does not apply to students who attended a private kindergarten program or those instances in which a child was sent from another state to reside apart from the family for the purpose of attending school.
  2. A child who will be six years old on or before September 30 of the school year must attend school.
  3. A child who has not attended kindergarten but meets the age requirements for school attendance may be admitted to first grade. After appropriate informal and/or formal observation and assessments, the principal, with the consent of the parents, may recommend alternative placement.
  4. Once a child is officially enrolled in kindergarten, the child is expected to attend school on a regular basis except in cases of normally excused absences.
